What’s the best new generation console for fitness gaming? As a gamer, I am very excited about the PS5 and the Xbox Series X, and I’m eager to find out what kind of exercise games they will offer.

While the new iteration of the Xbox is backwards compatible with most games, it is not compatible with the Kinect technology. Unfortunately, that means all the great fitness titles that use Kinect will not be playable on the Series X.  No replacement technology has been announced either.

Similarly, the PS5 has not announced any titles that require physical movement. However, their virtual reality offering, the PSVR, and the PS Move controllers will be compatible, which means PS4 titles that used these technology will be playable on the PS5. With VR technology, even games that aren’t sold as workout games, like Creed: Rise to Glory, offer a pretty good way to stay active. Also, there have been some rumors that Sony is developing a PSVR2 upgrade specifically for the PS5. Even if the rumors are true, the new version isn’t presently available.  Microsoft has no public plans to make VR technology compatible with Xbox Series X.

That means that right now the best pure gaming console available for fitness games is the Nintendo Switch. It has the best options available and the Joy-Con controllers work pretty well for detecting motion.

That said, I’d say an even better alternative, is a Virtual Reality headset. In terms of VR, the best option for fitness gaming today is probably the Oculus Quest 2 because it does not need to be connected to a separate computer and it has the latest tech. It’s also less expensive than any of the gaming consoles I mentioned. Here’s a list of the best fitness games both options have available.

The amount of gameplay offerings that allow the player to use motion as a means to play are countless. Hopefully, Sony and Microsoft have taken notice of Nintendo’s recent success with motion games and will put out some fitness games of their own.
